At some point this week–and I was unaware of this until I checked my traffic keyword activity–the “Watchmen” DVD was released. How do I know this? Because there’s apparently a line in both the print and movie versions, said by one of the characters, that is essentially identical to one of the Mekons song “Kidnapped,” off their album Mekons Honky Tonkin:

I’m not locked in here with you
You’re locked in here with me

Or it’s possible that there’s a Mekons lyric that is identical to the Watchmen comic. The album and the comic series were both released at the same time. Jon Langford et al named the band after The Mekon, some supervillain in the 50s comic, Dan Dare. And also, he’s a comic artist himself, so who knows? All I know is that it’s a brilliant line, and one nerd influenced another in some way, so I think we’ve all learned something here today.

Kidnapped, The Mekons
